College Soccer News - National Player of the Week - Akron Senior Forward Sam Gainford - Week Ending November 26, 2017

Gainford and teammate Stuart Holthusen continue to power a high powered Akron offense. Gainford scored from twenty-five yards out and sent a bending ball into the side of the net to contribute two goals in Akron's 3-2 win in overtime over a very good Wisconsin team.  Holthusen provided the game-winning goal for the Zips in overtime.

Gainford has scored ten goals so far this year and contributed three assists. Holthusen has found the back of the net twelve times and contributed three helpers.

Number five seed Akron improves to 18-3-1 and now advances to the Elite Eight  where they will face number four seed Louisville on Friday, December 1.  

 

College Soccer News - National Player of the Week - Butler Sophomore Forward Brandon Guhl - Week Ending November 19, 2017

Brandon Guhl Sophomore  Forward  Butler 

Guhl and his Butler teammates had a productive week of play. Guhl scored twice to help power the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over Lipscomb in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He also scored what proved to be the game-winner in Butler's 3-2 come from behind road win over number sixteen seed VCU.

Guhl is a difference maker who has scored a total of thirteen goals this year including five game-winners.

Butler improves to 14-4-2 and advances to the Sweet Sixteen for the third time in the history of the program.

The Bulldogs out of the Big East Conference will travel to Winston-Salem to square off with number one seed Wake Forest out of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday at 5 p.m. 

 

College Soccer News - National Player of the Week - Wisconsin Goalkeeper Philipp Schilling - Week Ending November 12, 2017

Team captain Schilling was brilliant between the pipes for the Badgers with seven saves including several key stops to play a key role in Wisconsin's 4-0 win over Big Ten regular season winner Michigan in the semifianls of the conference tournament. Schilling followed that performance up with seven saves during regulation as Wisconsin and Indiana played to a scoreless tie after 110 minutes of play. The Badgers then prevailed 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout during which he made a key stop and converted a penalty kick. 

John Trask pretty much summed things up when he stated, "Phil is as good of a goalkeeper as there is in the country and he proved that today." 

Wisconsin claimed their first Big Ten title in twenty-three years, improved to 11-4-4 overall, and punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. 

 

 

College Soccer News - National Player of the Week - Wake Forest Forward Jon Bakero - Week Ending November 5, 2017

Bakero is a finisher. He drove a header into the back of the net after receiving a cross from Brandon Servania and sent a one-timer into the far-post that was set up by passes from Logan Gdula and Luis Argudo to lead the Demon Deacons past Virginia Tech 3-0 in an ACC Tournament Quarterfinal contest.

Bakero is a playmaker who has scored thirteen times so far this year and contributed thirteen assists.

Wake Forest improves to 16-1-1 and advances to face a very good Clemson team in what shapes up to be an exciting ACC Tournament Semifinal match on Wednesday, November 8.
